Innovations in Supportive Care – Patients Tackling Side Effects of Radiation & Chemotherapy

The ASPIRE Study: A observational study which aims to better understand the mechanisms behind cachexia in head and neck cancer. This study is particularly focused on the protein GDF15, which is stress regulated hormone that is a known driver of metabolism. We are exploring how inflammation resulting from chemoradiation may drive its dysregulation, leading to negative nutritional outcomes.

REPAIR-1: A pilot study in people receiving radiotherapy for the treatment of head and neck cancer, which is exploring the protective properties of parthenolide, an extract from the feverfew plant, which has shown preclinical promise in protecting healthy tissue from radiation damage. In this unique study, participants act as their own control, receiving the interventional lotion (parthenolide) on one side of the neck and the placebo on the other.

PRO-TECT: A preclinical study which is investigating whether maintaining a ‘healthy’ oral microbiome using probiotics can limit oral mucositis/ ulceration of the mouth caused by radiotherapy.
